Hype...Rise or Fall

By Shawn Harris

Hype is a thing created by the media and fans. Hype is either positive or negative. Many teams this year have had some kind of hype created around them. You can even call it a buzz of some sort. When talking about a positive hype a couple teams come to mind. Both from the AFC East, the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins.

The Bills have this hype mostly coming from Head Coach Rex Ryan and a big trade for LeSean McCoy. Starting out with a 2-1 record. Not bad, especially considering how big the two wins have been. The first came against a team who many predicted to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl 51, the Indianapolis Colts. The Bills' defense was dominant against one of the NFL's finest young quarterbacks, Andrew Luck. The Bills rode this hype into a loss to the New England Patriots the next week (the Patriots are another story- they don't need any hype. They're straight up untouchable). The Bills however bounced back whooping the Dolphins this week, who also had a lot of hype this off season.
The Dolphins are sitting at 1-2 and seem to be not looking all that hard core as the presence of Suh would bring. Signing him instantly made them contenders in the AFC east but a slow start is making others think differently. Ryan Tannehil needs to pick up his game as fast as he picked up his new check this off season. Receiving elite QB check brings a big responsibility. I think he can, but as of now hasn't shown it.

NFL media and fans will always bring this hype, some rise and others don't, it sometimes comes during the season. Two teams who have created big hype lately are the Oakland Raiders and Atlanta Falcons.

The Raiders pick up another win after a blow out lose to the Bengals. Derek Carr two weeks Ina row throws for over 300 yards and multiple touchdowns. Winning clutch moment of the week with his game winning touchdown pass in week 2 against the Ravens. The "AC DC" connection, which Raider fans are calling the Derek Carr Amari Cooper duo, is getting big. Again wide receiver Amari Cooper gets over 100 yards receiving. Being the first rookie to do it in back to back games since DeSean Jackson in 08. Though the defense is not as productive as should be with the front seven they have. The Raider Nation had something to cheer for.

And of course Julio Jones...what else do you need to know about the Falcons? Doesn't really matter. Julio Jones is continuing to be a big play receiver. With a gigantic 20 targets on Sunday, Jones is on pace to be targeted on passes a whopping 252 times this season. The Falcons on both sides of the ball are looking awesome. This is in large part, of course, to new Head Coach Dan Quinn who is bringing a defensive mind to the team.

So much is changing in our NFL. It's exciting, and interesting.

Ju-Co to Big Show

By Jacob Sorenson Not every star athlete has the dream beginnings to a career. College football itself relies upon high school and junior college talent to provide a depth worthy team, but many times those who originally could not make a division one impact right out of high school make their names known at the junior college level to get to the big show of the division one stage. There are many noteworthy names which we know to be the stars of our favorite teams. Any many rising stars who will certainly made their names known in years to come. Devontae Booker Devontae booker has led the Utah Utes the past few seasons and their run game has arguably never looked better. A very balanced offense relies on quarterback keepers, a heavy run game, and a mild pass game with a lot of trickery. As Travis Wilson rarely passes the ball over 30 attempts in a game, Devontae booker carries the ball anywhere between 20 to 35 times in a game. His 783 rushing yards and 8 TD, continue...

I'm a bandwagon Seattle Mariners fan

By Damon Chlarson Yes, you read that right. I hopped on the bandwagon when I was nine years old during their record-setting 116-win season in 2001. Ichiro was the AL MVP and Rookie of the Year. Lou Pineilla was AL Manager of the Year.  Bret Boone led the league in RBI. Heck, even Safeco Field was home of the all-star game. It was quite the time to be alive in the Pacific Northwest. Bret Boone, all-star second baseman and probable steroid user, encapsulated all that was cool for the time. He had the quarterback smile. He had the frosted tips like he sung in Sugar Ray. He had forearms the size of Mississippi. But most of all, Bret Boone knew how to bat flip, and bat flip he did on 37 home runs that season. He bat flipped, and he admired his home runs. Sometimes he would bat flip and it would be a warning track shot. But that man loved his job, and I emulated it. Much has been said recently regarding players criticizing those who admire their homeruns....

A new Era in BYU Football, Rivalry comeback in Vegas turned Vegas Bowl into high profile matchup

Kalani Sitake Following its two year hiatus, the Holy War was back. In two weeks of upheaval the beloved in state match between the Utes and Cougars brought many to their feet. The lead up to the game was filled with turmoil. A mix of coaching changes, brutal conversation, and even question of preparation and desire to play have led the headlines. Reports from ESPN, CBS college sports, and other credible sites mentioned the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl as the most intriguing match up of the bowl season. In rank of importance, the bowl game was ranked top 5 in the nation. Not only was the bowl game an in state rivalry, but the regional match had national attention as Bronco Mendenhall is sending his talents to the ACC and Virginia. Unlike most bowl games, it started out with a horrid thud. The five consecutive drives leading to five consecutive turnovers left the stadium in mere silence. The first quarter alone, lasting over an hour in total, had less than 100 yards of offense,...
