Five Things

Five Reasons to Stay Tuned to the World Series

By Damon Chlarson

1.      1. Yoenis Cespedes. Plain and simple, Cespedes has had an immeasurable impact on the New York Mets’ offense and personality. Cespedes went from being the cleanup hitter in Oakland, traded to Boston for Jon Lester, then traded to Detroit for Rick Porcello. “Yo” was then sent over to New York at the trade deadline (after a failed attempt to by the Mets to get Carlos Gomez). Now, it appears he’s found a home and he’s a dynamic personality with a big bat and a huge arm.

2.      2. The Kansas City Royals togetherness. Baseball is a mental game, and the unity in a clubhouse can cover a multitude of sins. Alex Gordon, Mike Moustakas, Lorenzo Cain, Yordano Ventura, Salvador Perez, and Eric Hosmer all came up together through KC’s farm system and are tight knit group. Recent additions Johnny Cueto and Ben Zobrist are fitting in well and contributing.

3.      3. The Mets’ pitching rotation is nuts. Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Steven Matz are a great young core. The latter two pitchers made their debut this season and are pitching in the World Series. They rely heavily on the punch out and work the strike zone. KC strikes out less than any other team. Something’s gotta give.

4.      4.  Daniel Murphy is hitting the screw off the baseball. He’s homered in six straight playoff games. SIX. He’s simply getting it done and winning games for the Mets. Between David Wright, Wilmer Flores, Yo Cespedes, and Murphy, this is a lengthy lineup worth watching.

5.      5, Jerry Seinfeld loves the Mets. He claps funny, and Twitter loves it. For all the Mets fans that suffer through Yankee glory days, this one’s for them.

Can you tell I’m rooting for the Mets? We’ve got two great pitching staffs and dangerous offenses that can get up in a hurry, and come back in a hurry. The Mets are coming off a sweep of the young Cubs, and Royals put the Blue Jays away in six games. Baseball is awesome.

College Football Playoff expansion necessary

The regular season is near its end. Twitter has been buzzing with news on possible Big 12 expansion and the college football playoff. Following one of the most injury ridden and surprise packed seasons to date, the college football playoff committee has chosen that Clemson, Alabama, Michigan State, and Oklahoma to represent the top four in the playoff. In a turn from the wild and whacky endings of previous years, including last year when Ohio State made a surprise entry, this year was simple. Ohio State lost to Michigan State in a nail biter near the end of the season. The loss not only paralyzed their chances of retaining Ezekiel Elliot, but also a chance at the playoff. On the last Saturday of the regular season, In a last gasp for hope, Ohio State beat Michigan handily. Ohio State had made a case that they were the better team, but received no condolences. As a neutral viewer, I argue that the one loss Ohio State team deserved a chance. Not only were the defending national ch...

Holiday hires fill BYU football coaching staff, Help return to Royal

Kalani Sitake Provo - The Saturday following Christmas day is here and there is nothing greater than the joy of college football. The changes announced by BYU during their early week press conference lead us to believe that there many great additions to come. With time constantly winding, little time was lost in making big time decisions. As Christmas eve was winding down Cougar nation received the excellent news that its very own golden boy, the Heisman hero, Ty Detmer would be returning home. Kalani Sitake had made one of the biggest recruiting jumps in BYU history with the addition of Troy Warner and Handsome Tanielu. Several commits to Stanford had begun to de-commit and other changes were molding the football landscape, or at least BYU's landscape. And to add on to the recruiting, Ty Detmer finalized his contract. Ed Lamb Along with the announcement of Ty Detmer, Sitake also announced the addition of Iliasa Tuiaki who was the Linebackers coach at Oregon...

First Loss, A Stress Relief

By Jacob Sorenson Something a real sports fan must actively look forward to is the first loss of the season. This is true in any sport and any season, but specifically in college football. How the team responds to the first loss is an indicator of their character. The stresses and pressures holding a team stationary are relieved after a loss and how they progress or digress moving forward gives professional scouts and fans reason to have hope in the present or hope for better days ahead. Improvement can even lead to national recognition and championships. But the loss is almost always a relief and a reason to settle down and play the great game of football, solely for the love of the game. I remember looking back years ago when BYU played an impressive 12-0 season. With Brandon Doman at quarterback and impressive running back Luke Staley, BYU was destined for greatness. BYU had coaching great Gary Crowton at the helm and their season was moving forward, until they met H...
