Kalani Sitake Provo - The Saturday following Christmas day is here and there is nothing greater than the joy of college football. The changes announced by BYU during their early week press conference lead us to believe that there many great additions to come. With time constantly winding, little time was lost in making big time decisions. As Christmas eve was winding down Cougar nation received the excellent news that its very own golden boy, the Heisman hero, Ty Detmer would be returning home. Kalani Sitake had made one of the biggest recruiting jumps in BYU history with the addition of Troy Warner and Handsome Tanielu. Several commits to Stanford had begun to de-commit and other changes were molding the football landscape, or at least BYU's landscape. And to add on to the recruiting, Ty Detmer finalized his contract. Kalani Sitake Following its two year hiatus, the Holy War was back. In two weeks of upheaval the beloved in state match between the Utes and Cougars brought many to their feet. The lead up to the game was filled with turmoil. A mix of coaching changes, brutal conversation, and even question of preparation and desire to play have led the headlines. Reports from ESPN, CBS college sports, and other credible sites mentioned the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl as the most intriguing match up of the bowl season. In rank of importance, the bowl game was ranked top 5 in the nation. Not only was the bowl game an in state rivalry, but the regional match had national attention as Bronco Mendenhall is sending his talents to the ACC and Virginia. Unlike most bowl games, it started out with a horrid thud. The five consecutive drives leading to five consecutive turnovers left the stadium in mere silence. The regular season is near its end. Twitter has been buzzing with news on possible Big 12 expansion and the college football playoff. Following one of the most injury ridden and surprise packed seasons to date, the college football playoff committee has chosen that Clemson, Alabama, Michigan State, and Oklahoma to represent the top four in the playoff. In a turn from the wild and whacky endings of previous years, including last year when Ohio State made a surprise entry, this year was simple. Ohio State lost to Michigan State in a nail biter near the end of the season. The loss not only paralyzed their chances of retaining Ezekiel Elliot, but also a chance at the playoff. On the last Saturday of the regular season, In a last gasp for hope, Ohio State beat Michigan handily. Ohio State had made a case that they were the better team, but received no condolences. Every day we live our lives looking to be examples to others, and to change the world. We have icons right around us who get to make it every day. The truth is we all make our own history. We choose what defines us and our destiny. This year BYU football has been in a similar place. They made history in the first game of the year in the miracle at memorial with Mitch Mathews' hail mary touchdown catch to win the game. They made history one week later in Lavell Edwards Stadium where the term, Lavell Lob was keyed as the future of Tanner Mangums BYU football career. Then came week three and a heartbreaking loss to none other than UCLA. The kings of taking BYU to the wire at home, and beating them by one point. By Jacob Sorenson I as many of you stayed up late to watch BYU lose the other night to Long Beach State. As the 11:45pm hour rolled around I was beyond giddy to see the cougars high powered offense do what it often does, and I got nothing but the opposite. The first 5 minutes looked promising. Jumping out to a 10-2 lead the cougars werent about to fail us. Oh, were we wrong. The cougars began their turnover filled night early in the first half. The count had reached more than 22 by the final buzzer and as a fan, I was outraged. "Why in the world would a game like this intrigue me to watch?" I wondered. The other overwhelming factor that led to the Cougars demise were free throws. No team in our modern basketball world can expect to miss 13 free throws and still win the game, let alone a come from behind victory.
